The Use of Fabric Masks

The Value of a Fabric Mask

The most effective way for the public to prevent the spread of COVID-19 is physical distancing and frequent hand washing

The general public may wear a fabric face covering in settings where physical distancing measures are difficult to maintain

Any mask (fabric or disposable) is ineffective and may increase risk if it is not kept clean, and not removed/stored/ put on safely

Fabric masks may reduce the spread of  virus from a person who is wearing a mask

Fabric masks are not proven to protect a person from others who may have the virus

The Use and Cleaning of Fabric Masks

If the face covering can be cleaned, you should:

put it directly into the washing machine or a bag that can be emptied into the washing machine

wash with other items using a hot cycle with laundry detergent (no special soaps are needed), and dry thoroughly

wash your hands after putting the face covering into the laundry

Masks should be laundered every 24 hours at least**
